Life in the Finnish village of Ratula fundamentally influenced the perception of the world, the
artistic process and themes of the artist, whose paintings are inspired by the raw beauty of
Finnish nature and the traces of human activity in it. Peat mining, rusted surfaces of boilers or
cracked wooden barns resisting the pouring rain, remnants of the forest industry and everyday
life. The paintings from the Solitude series (2022-2023) are an emotional statement reflecting
the fragility and strength of humanity. The exhibition thus documents the stories hidden in
nature as well as the statements of dilapidated objects defying time.
For Barbora Kachlíková painting is a form of meditation in a changing landscape, where a
person is never completely alone nor among people. However, solitude as a central theme
does not represent isolation but brings the possibility of perceiving that which is not spoken.
The stillness of the forest, the distant sounds of machinery, shades of white and grey above
the horizon in a region, where there is only three hours of daylight for half of the year. An
unspoken dialogue with the surroundings teaches the painter herself to be silent as words are
not needed. She becomes an observer of the silence and the repetitive cycles of work in the
field and in the forest. A look into the depths of one inner self and a reflection of loneliness
in a foreign country.
